The earthquake action is described by the sudden release of energy caused by the earthquake. This natural disaster occurs as a result of the displacement of tectonic plates or the release of energy within the Earth's crust and upper layer of mantle. The effects on structures are obvious, but they can not be fully predicted by the time of occurrence and strength. As the effect of earthquakes on a structure causes nonlinear behavior, it is necessary to introduce nonlinearity at the design stage of the structure. The next problem in designing of structure that is resistant to an earthquake is the way of defining the load of an earthquake. Therefore, in the thesis a uniform hazard spectrum is applied, based on which the relevant earthquake records of the observed areas were selected for the possible construction of a reinforced concrete commercial-residential building. By selecting three areas for defining earthquakes (Osijek, Zagreb and Dubrovnik) and creating a uniform hazard spectrum, ten earthquake records for each area can be selected. The nonlinearity of the structure model is shown through the material nonlinearity of concrete and reinforcing steel, through the plasticization of the elements at the ends of the elements, and through dynamic analysis of the responses. Based on the results, it is possible to predict the behavior of the designed business-residential building, and by comparing the results, the areas of behavior for each earthquake area are classified. In accordance with the results of the analysis, a proposal for the expression of the relationship between the inter-storey displacement of the structure, the area of behavior and the peak soil acceleration is made for the example of an business-residential building.
